I have something for you to consider:

Think about those who know what universal atonement advocates believe and yet consider at least some universal atonement advocates to be saved. What do these people believe about the gospel? They must not believe that the atonement is an essential part of the gospel!! Consider:

(TC = "Tolerant Calvinist")

P1: TC believes that some saved people believe universal atonement

P2: TC believes that all saved people believe the gospel.

C: Thus, TC believes that some who believe the gospel believe universal atonement.

P1: TC believes that some who believe the gospel believe universal atonement

P2: TC believes that universal atonement means that Christ's blood did not actually atone, did not actually propitiate, did not actually redeem, did not actually ensure the salvation of anyone.

C: Thus, TC believes that some who believe the gospel believe that Christ's blood did not actually atone, did not actually propitiate, did not actually redeem, did not actually ensure the salvation of anyone.

Are you with me so far?

Now what does this say about what TC thinks about the gospel?

Well, TC believes that the gospel is made up of certain doctrines. He also believes that some who believe the gospel believe that Christ's blood did not actually atone, did not actually propitiate, did not actually redeem, did not actually ensure the salvation of anyone. Thus, he does NOT believe that the gospel includes the doctrine that Christ's blood actually atoned, actually propitiated, actually redeemed, actually ensured salvation! He does NOT believe that the gospel includes the atonement! And this means that TC does not know what the gospel is! And if TC does not know what the gospel is, he is lost!

Now consider this:

P1: All who believe a false gospel of salvation conditioned on the sinner are unregenerate.

P2: Universal atonement is a false gospel of salvation conditioned on the sinner.

C: All who believe universal atonement are unregenerate.

Now the only way someone can disagree with C is if they disagree with either P1 or P2 (or both).

Think about those who believe that P1 is untrue. These are people who believe that at least some who believe a false gospel of salvation conditioned on the sinner are regenerate.

Think about those who believe that P2 is untrue. These are people who believe that universal atonement is not a false gospel of salvation conditioned on the sinner.

Now, can a regenerate person believe that P1 is untrue? Of course not! Can a regenerate person believe that P2 is untrue? Of course not!

Thus, all who disagree with C are unregenerate.

In Christ,

Marc
